The Young and the Rest of Us — Finishing a Script

Finishing a script feels both euphoric and draining — a rush of relief, sadness, and exhaustion all at once.

It's like birthing a newborn into the world: a piece of yourself made tangible. Pages that once lived only in your mind, in fragments and late-night notes and half-formed conversations, suddenly exist as a physical thing you can hold in your hands. Bound. Real. Done.

“There's immense satisfaction in shaping something from nothing, yet a quiet emptiness follows — knowing the intimate dance with your characters has reached its final page.”

That's the paradox no one warns you about. You spend months — sometimes years — living inside a world you invented. You know these characters better than they know themselves. You know what they want, what they fear, what they'd say at 2am when no one is watching. And then, on the last page, you type BLACKOUT or CURTAIN or END — and just like that, the door closes.

With The Young and the Rest of Us, that feeling hit differently. This wasn't just a script — it was a world. A ridiculous, heightened, deeply human world full of characters who surprised me at every turn. The satisfaction of finishing it was real. So was the grief.

But here's what I've come to understand: that emptiness isn't a sign that something went wrong. It's a sign that something went right. You can't grieve what didn't matter. The quiet that follows a finished script is the same quiet that follows any act of genuine creation — the moment after you've given everything you had, and the work is no longer yours to carry.

It belongs to the audience now. And that's exactly as it should be.

If you're a writer in the middle of something right now — keep going. The euphoria and the drain are both waiting for you on the other side of that last page. Both are worth it.
